A Most Unusual Small Charles II Oak Side Cupboard

The boarded top, with moulded edge, lifting to reveal a shallow compartment with a beautifully figured elm base. Beneath the top rail - which retains the original iron escutcheon - is a good "waist" moulding, sitting just above the single two-panelled door, again retaining the original escutcheon, and fabulously shaped iron 'H" hinges. The door opens to an interior of a single full shelf made from a single well-grained elm board, and a lovely little "run around the edge" shelf supported on small shaped brackets. All vertical and horizontal rails are run-moulded.

The back is formed from four thick heavily chamfered oak panels, set into a simple workmanlike frame.

A really unusual piece of mid-17th century English oak furniture - lovely colour, proportions, patina and condition.

English, circa 1660.

Width 28 inches, height 43 inches, depth 16 inches.
