A Delightful Pair of Early 19th Century Coaching Scenes
Signed and dated T Westell, 1820.
The Worcester and London Royal Mail, painted in a slightly naïve manner, with horses, coaches and figures. The building in the background is reputedly Broadway Tower, a folly built for George William, the 6th Earl of Coventry and completed in 1798. The Tower can still be seen approaching Broadway, Worcestershire and is the second highest point in the Cotswolds.
The second picture shows the London to Cheltenham coach, operated from Booth Hall in Gloucester (see below right), by R Pratt, who ran coaches east into London and west into mid-Wales. Again, the picture shows naïve figures aboard the coach, with a rustic gentleman walking along the road.
