Edmund Bristow (1787-1876)

Three early 19th century oil on board caricatures of monkeys in slightly humorous scenes, all in the original carved and gilt frames.

Bristow was a well-known painter of animals, having great sympathy with them and able to convey their characteristic movements and expressions. He excelled in the drawing of monkeys, cats and horses, his work tended to be on the smaller scale, but with great attention to detail. Over the years I have had a few of Bristow’s monkey pictures, always humanising the animals in domestic and sporting scenes, but invariably of this size.

Bristow died in Eton on 12 February 1876 at the age of 89, although he produced little work for the last 15 years of his life.
