A Fine Early Charles II Oak Settle

The four panel back set into a heavily and complicated moulded frame, with “zig-zag” stamped decoration on the recessed surfaces. The original two-plank seat, above a very well-shaped centre rail, which again has zig-zag decoration along the recessed part of the moulding.

The downward curving arms are supported on well-turned arm supports which continue down into the legs which terminate in the original feet or “toes”, which are joined by an all-round stretcher.

Note: It is most unusual to have this sort of “bi-cuspid” scrolling on a middle rail of a piece of furniture. It is normally found either on the rails around a joint stool or the bottom of buffets of a similar period.
