A Fine Pair of Early 19th Century Yew Wood Windsor Armchairs

The high backs, with an incised line around the curved hoop and central pierced splat, flanked by four tapering “sticks”. The curved arm bow, supported on elegantly turned front supports, which are morticed into the well-figured elm seats. The finely turned legs are joined by a crinoline stretcher.

All these constructional styles and techniques are the work of William Wheatland, who practiced his trade in the hamlet of Rockley, in North Nottinghamshire, circa 1830.

Over the years of polishing, the yew wood has achieved a wonderful deep colour and patina.
