A Narrow Early 17th Century Plank Chest

The plank top and front, which retain the original hasp and lockplate, are both decorated with run-moulded edges, whilst the backboard and bottom board are quite plain. The boarded ends have a simple “V” cut which extends down to form an integral support. The interior retains the original “candle-box” or “till”.

Many years ago, these long narrow chests were often called “sword” chests, but I think this is a bit of a Victorian misnomer!

Rich, burnished chestnut colour.

English, first quarter of the 17^th century.

Length 48 inches, depth 13.5 inches, height 22 inches.
