A Rare Low Back Yew Wood Windsor Armchair Stamped Wheatland, Rockley

William Wheatland moved to Rockley in the early 1820s to take up a position as leader of the Weslyan Chapel. He continued his trade as chair maker and started the Rockley tradition of chair making. This chair is of particularly fine quality, made from well-figured yew wood, with a dished elm seat. The single-ring turned legs - which are a feature of these early Rockley chairs - are joined by a crinoline stretcher. To the edge of the seat is the deep stamp Wheatland, Rockley (fl 1822-1828).
