A Superb 18th Century Elm Farmhouse Table

Having a wonderfully patinated top, made from a single board of well-figured elm, measuring an impressive 12 feet 10 inches long by 3 feet 2 inches wide, and almost three inches thick. Either end has a single cleat, which is mitred into the board and fixed with three wedged tenon joints.

The top is supported on the original six-legged oak base (elm would not have been used to form the legs as it does not stand well on damp floors), which has corner brackets between the horizontal frame and vertical leg.

The use of elm would suggest this table was made in the West Country, where big elm trees were often found, indeed many early houses in Somerset and Dorset have elm joists and floorboards.

A highly impressive and possibly unique table.
