A Wonderful Early 17th Century Carved Oak Pilaster
Deeply and richly carved, the panel is topped by a stylised fleur de lis, with crossed swords above a pair of upturned thistles. Continuing down, there are a pair of crossed powder horns, with the pistols below. At the bottom are a pair of crossed violins.
Probably this would have formed part of a door or fire surround and the motifs would be part of a wealthy or noble family’s coat of arms.
English, circa 1600.
Width 4.5 inches by height 34 inches.
